Anio, the river bearing the name of a King
According to mythology, the king Anius drowned in the icy water of a river while attempting to rescue his daughter Salia, kidnapped by Mercury. The gentle flowing of the Anio, modern-day Aniene and tributary of the Tiber, tells you the story of these lands. Follow the river to reach the perched medieval villages of the Aniene Valley. If you like walking, then follow the footpaths to enjoy nature at its finest and have an exciting experience with rafting, kayaking or canoeing!
The flavors of the Aniene Valley
Regardless of what restaurant and farmhouse you visit, you will find endless options for delicious local products, like the Aniene trout and crayfish! Some excellent legume species are grown in this stretch of land, such as the Slow Food Presidia “Fagiolina di Arsoli” and “Fagiolone di Vallepietra”. Also, do not miss out on the spelt Sagne with spicy tomato sauce. You are in for a treat! Finally, we recommend the “Ciambelline di magro”, meant to be dipped in wine.
