The ghost villages of Roman Sabina
Have you ever walked through the alleys of an abandoned medieval village? You can almost hear the voices of those who lived there and the sounds of everyday life: bells ringing, children running about and playing in the squares, and adults doing housework and toiling in the fields. You will step on the same cobblestones that once led to the church and the bakery, and still run along the walls. Today, the remains of this small medieval village are completely surrounded by silence and blooming nature.
Stazzano Vecchio: the medieval village, the fortress and the rediscovered spring!
A small country road will take you to the gates of Stazzano Vecchio. The 1901 earthquake forced the locals to leave their homes. Each stone speaks of an ancient history of people who settled here in ancient roman times. Your heart will start beating faster at the sight of the remains of this ghost village reclaimed by nature! The small stream flowing at its feet can even be heard gurgling through the valley in certain periods of time. Not far from the small village, a spring that once supplied water to the site has recently been rediscovered and freed from the vegetation. Have a good drink of fresh water!
